30km speed limit in school zones?

2 hours agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

The ACT Government would like community views to be expressed on reducing the speed limit around schools to 30kmph – but there has been nothing posted on the ‘Time to Talk’ website yet, so let’s start the community discussion here. I think 40kph is slow enough – I do not want the speed limit to be dropped to 30kph [...]

Should we digitally name and shame Canberra’s bad drivers?

2 hours agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

I love social media sites, especially those community notice boards. Occasionally they throw up little gems like these: “And the employee of the week goes to…. the wing nut from xxx Company driving a white Territory xxx number plate  through Murrumbateman this morning. Your skill in driving that motorcyclist off the road at the end of the overtaking [...]

Best of Canberra – Schnitzel

2 hours agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

Going out for a schnitty is about as Aussie as drinking a VB tinny at a John Farnham farewell concert. It’s a very safe bet, at least amongst my friends, that at any time of any day, someone is up for a schnitzel feed. Everyone has their own schnitzels that they swear by, and this week, [...]

2 hours agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

The Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG) is presently staging an exhibition not to be missed. Titled INK REMIX: Contemporary art from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, this exhibition represents a fabulous opportunity to see a great range of contemporary work by artists across several East Asian countries. The CMAG curator, Sophie McIntyre, has delivered a beautiful [...]

80% increase in Canberra car break-ins – is this avoidable?

2 hours agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

In the last few months I have noticed a lot of people reporting stolen cars, smashed windows and thefts on various online community notice boards. I wasn’t sure if crime had spiked or whether online posts were encouraging more people to come forward. ACT Policing recently confirmed that there has been an 80 per cent increase [...]

More than 100 people have been quarantined at the Fyshwick Mail Centre on Canberra Avenue, after an unknown substance was found in a package. The building and staff have been isolated. Belconnen Soccer Club robbed at gunpoint

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to the aggravated robbery of the Belconnen Soccer Club in McKellar late Saturday night (1 August 2015). About 11.07pm, a single male offender entered the club armed with a small handgun. Five patrons were exiting the club when the offender entered and rushed past them to the front counter. The offender immediately [...]

Best of Canberra taste off – Hangover food

Last week I put the call out for Canberra’s best hangover food and the results did not surprise me.  Apart from the one vote that came in for a steaming bowl of pho from Pho Phu Quoc, for the most part, everyone seems to agree that the best hangover food is something a little bit salty [...]

Fly Pelican enters Canberra aviation market

After so many airlines flying Canberra as part of a regional network have gone under (Rex, Brindabella), I was surprised to discover that there’s a brand new player doing the Canberra-Newcastle corridor. Fly Pelican flies small 19-seater planes with propellers (to my airline-phobic concern) but while I would normally drive the six hours rather than fly, I [...]

Bronwyn Bishop and the trough of entitlement

Hi there from the Apple Isle. I’m doing a Grumpy Old Grandad’s Terror Tour of Tassie with an old mate of mine.  He’s 75 and I’m a bit younger. The trip down the Hume Highway was great – easy as! The trip across the ditch on the boat was another thing altogether. Sick as! A lay over in [...]

Why the “coolest little capital” needs greater participation in the arts

Canberra has some of the best seasonal vistas and panoramic landscapes of any city in Australia, as well as a highly educated community, a progressive culture and an enjoyable, accessible lifestyle. We are fortunate to have some of the best cultural institutions in the country with places like the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, with [...]

Women’s team sports in Canberra? (For a beginner)

3 days agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

Hi all, I was hoping to find a women’s sports team to train with on weeknights or weekends. I haven’t played any team sports in a while but am keen to try something new while also meeting new people (I recently moved interstate). I’ve had some trouble tracking down info for women wanting to get into a sport [...]

Weekend cafe hot spot: Chatterbox Espresso Bar, Belconnen

3 days agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

Before we head out for breakfast on a Saturday morning, I check Facebook to see if anyone is talking about a new breakfast spot. Facebook is handy like that. Because we live in the city, we tend to frequent the same places so it’s really convenient to turn to social media for new suggestions. I have [...]

A look around Canberra – Bruce

3 days agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

The suburb of Bruce is named after former prime minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce, who occupied the highest office in the land between 1923 and 1929. Though, judging by a recent meme doing the rounds in Canberra, some might be forgiven for thinking former US sports star Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner has something to do with [...]

Food forests, olive oil and ginger beer workshops this August

4 days agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

The Canberra Environment Centre has launched a new set of workshops as part of the Sustainability Workshop Series. Workshops are refreshingly relevant to the evolving Canberra ‘scene’; markets, fresh food and a good drop. Topics include growing a food forest (4th August), making olive oil (a talk, 18 August), and making ginger beer with Garry Sully from [...]
