Breakfast and sport in Civic

Hi Rioters, I’m looking for a breakfast venue in civic where myself and a few others can watch English Premier League matches. The requirements: Open in time for a 7am kick off (weekday) TV with Foxtel and Fox Sports Simple enough on the face of it, but I’m struggling. Any suggestions except the yellow arches?

Government calls for public views on use and sale of ‘e-cigarettes’

Options to reduce the appeal of personal vaporisers, or e-cigarettes, that include a ban on sales to persons under 18 years of age and restrictions on where they can be used have been released for public discussion by the Chief Minister and Minister for Health Katy Gallagher. The discussion paper on the sale and use of [...]

The human body – the final frontier?

[ 26 November 2014 at 1:00 pm; ] Want to hear about a rainbow band-aid that can diagnose skin cancer and how ecstasy causes brain hypothermia? Come along! Despite hundreds of years of advances, the highly complex workings of the human body are still largely a mystery. A group of researchers at a new ARC Centre of Excellence are aiming to change all that. They [...]

OMG … Bookplate (and Paperplate) …

…at the National Library went into liquidation on Monday.

War and the Arts in this Centenary year…

I was helping my father dig a post hole in the blazing Queensland sun. I had offered to hook the post hole digger up to the Ferguson tractor, but he never could see the sense of spending twenty minutes to do that for just one hole. Except for the sound of shovel and crowbar cutting in [...]

Local Leaders – Peter and Michael Harrington (Sage and Akiba restaurants)

Brothers Peter and Michael Harrington, co-owners of Sage Dining Rooms in Braddon and the soon-to-open Akiba restaurant in Civic, have a passion for good food and hard work. They grew up in the kitchens of their parents’ many Canberra restaurants, and started working as kitchen hands on the weekend at age ten. “It was all we ever [...]

Bored Little Yappy Dogs…

I am writing to the owners of all those yappy little Furballs that are kicked out of the house at 7-8am and don’t see their loving masters till 5pm. Little dogs get bored when cooped up in the backyard all day and love to just yap yap yap yip yap at nothing all day. This is most troubling to [...]

It’s Time… to stop Coles and Woolworths

Andrew Barr, I don’t want another Coles in Dickson. I want more small business – and I think Jon Stanhope would agree with me. The greatest moral struggle of our generation is whether governments have the capacity, or the will, to represent their fellow citizens firstly and fundamentally, and at the exclusion of vested interests that [...]

Best of Canberra – Take Away (suburban)

Friday nights and take away go together like peanut butter and jelly. Growing up, Friday night was always fish and chip night. As a family of four we would go together to pick up a big parcel of deep fried goodness, wrapped in old newspaper. Potato scallops, crumbed fish and chips with extra salt and [...]

Farmers Markets in Canberra – are they truly ‘regional’?

I went to the Capital Regional Farmers Market on Saturday morning. I don’t go to farmers markets that often, but go when I can because I like the concept of supporting local producers and skipping the ‘middleman’ supermarket chains. I have to say I was shocked to see a stall from Tweed Valley selling [...]

Dogfighting in the region: is it happening and what can we do?

2 weeks agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

I have an unhealthy obsession with community Facebook pages. Call of the Beast: The verdict

2 weeks agoAustralia / Canberra : RiotACT

I finished my first Tough Mudder last year and loved it, so when Call of the Beast organisers Dan and Luke generously offered me tickets to this year’s event, held last Saturday 8 November, I was excited to find out how Canberra’s own and original obstacle course race compared. The verdict: Call of the Beast is the pleasant middle [...]
