I'd written about this before. It's a huge deal that the military's gay ban has been lifted. But folks should refrain from saying that now "all Americans" can serve openly. Trans Americans cannot. I think it's going to be a heavy lift, lifting the ban on trans service members any time soon. Show More Summary
An interesting point that I don't entirely agree with. Finally, this case brings up intersections of gender, sexuality, and culture. Maricon is, after all, a Spanish word, used by Latinos in a culturally specific way. It’s easy for Anglo...Show More Summary
At this point, it's pretty clear that Chick-fil-A's public relations people are either really bad at their jobs, or they've been completely cut of the loop and someone who knows nothing about PR or crisis management, like the top brass...Show More Summary
Chick-fil-A is backing a fundraiser this week for a group that Media Matters has labeled anti-gay. The Marriage and Family Foundation was not only included in the investigation by Equality Matters of the fast-food chain's questionable giving history, it was identified as the top antigay recipient in 2010. During the debate on repealing Don't Ask, Don't tell, the crazies said up to half a million troops would leave the military if "the gay" was allowed to serve openly. From the Christian Science Monitor: More immediately, the company’s corporate plans to broaden its reach outside of the South may also be a factor in its policy change. The company's socially conservative management has made news before, but the firm's values seemed in sync with many Southerners' views on church, God, and marriage. Show More Summary
An excellent point, by Roger Simon, about Romney's hazing/assault of a gay kid in his youth. And there is another thing that troubles me even though some dismiss it as trivial. I am still bothered by Romney attacking that gay kid and...Show More Summary
A Chicago Alderman says the company wrote him and said they'll no longer give money to anti-gay organizations. Chick-fil-A is refusing to confirm the existence of the letter, while issuing a wishy-washy statement. This may be a big deal. Show More Summary
Good for the Blue Jays. We wrote about this yesterday. Though it doesn't sound like Escobar entirely "gets it": Escobar insisted the word is often used within teams and by Latinos and "I didn't see it as something bad at the time." "For us, it doesn't have the significance to the way it's being interpreted now," he said. Show More Summary

I can't believe someone would be so stupid as to do this. Boy, the Blue Jays had better lay down serious punishment for this, lest anyone think they endorse this kind of bigotry, which they certainly wouldn't tolerate (one hopes) had other minorities been slurred. A slur is a slur. And either you're with it or you're against it.
Idiot much? “I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads.” “Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That’s just my opinion,” he said, adding that he doesn’t consider himself part of the “gay community.”This again falls in the category of stars who need to learn to STFU. Show More Summary
As Mainers United for Marriage kicks off the final phase of the marriage campaign, they've released a new ad that takes on the issue of religious freedom. Knowing the NOM/Schubert playbook will feature lies about the impact of this law on churches, they're addressing the attack early. Reverend Michael Gray, the lead signer on the petition that put marriage back on the ballot...
No locusts. Military leaders and gay and lesbian service members say the year that has passed since the repeal took effect has been remarkable for what hasn’t happened. Recruitment and retention have not fallen off as some opponents of the repeal predicted they would. Show More Summary
Very hard to excerpt. It's just such a wonderful story, and so wonderfully written by the NYT's Paula Schwartz. Read this excerpt, then go read the entire thing. “It became clear we had to have a conversation as to what we were doing,” Mr. Show More Summary
AMERICAblog reader BeccaM weighs in on my earlier post about Rick Santorum bemoaning that smart people will never support the religious right or politicians like him. Let's take this the next layer down: These are precisely the reasons they -- the wingnut religious right extremists -- are deliberately trying to undermine our schools. Show More Summary

Very interesting. Low visibility has always been a problem for the trans community. People got accustomed to, and even started liking and supporting, gays because they got to know us, and see us. This kind of publicity is huge, and hugely important.
