Beached Whale Dies Near Miami, Baby Whale In Distress

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A beached mother whale has died near Miami and rescuers are continuing to try to save her baby. The creatures, which appear to be beaked whales, were spotted Monday afternoon by beachgoers in waist-deep water who then tried to steer them out to sea. The baby apparently followed its mother to shore. Vanessa Lane of the Miami-based Marine Animal Rescue Society says teams of rescuers and a veterinarian are working to save the baby whale, which is in critical condition.
