Manning Marable wins Pulitzer for Malcolm 'Malcolm X': This year's prize in the history category went to the late Manning Marable for “Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention,” which the committee called “a work that separates fact from fiction and blends the heroic and tragic.” Emancipation Day: more meaningful than ever: Georgetown History professor Maurice Jackson writes that the holiday commemorating the day President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Emancipation Act and freeing the city’s 3,128 slaves is especially poignant as the city's African American population dwindles.
