A gesture by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to mark the 13th year of democracy since the end of military rule in 1999 has backfired in spectacular fashion with thousands of students taking to the streets. As Jonathan announced the renaming of the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University in a TV broadcast on Tuesday morning thousands of students came out around their campus in an effort to preserve the well-known name.
