On May 29, 2010, the San Francisco Giants signed the recently released outfielder Pat Burrell to a minor league contract. Burrell was let go by the frugal Tampa Bay Rays despite the fact that he was in the final year of a contract that owed him nine million dollars in 2010. The Rays ate the money because they felt Burrell was washed up and couldn't help them even though they were a contending team.
