Let's embrace this new era of private science funding

This week, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announcedan initiative to give $3 billion dollars to UCSF for funding biomedical research. The tagline accompanying the funding in which they promised to “cure, prevent or manage all diseases in our children’s lifetime” drew scorn from scientists, but the bigger message of their philanthropy should not be lost on us.
