Petaluma police said the fire — spotted by passing California Highway Patrol officers about 3:15 p.m. — was in the area of Stuart and McKenzie drives, a residential area east of the highway.
Cars were being diverted off the northbound lanes of the highway at the Lakeville exit so that fire equipment could get to the scene.
