Unearthed treasures back in public eye at Academy of Sciences

The essential stuff of life in the digital age — the minerals and gems that smartphones, laptops and the entire Internet require to function — are going on display at the California Academy of Sciences in an exhibit unseen for a dozen years. The items in the exhibit, called “Gems and Minerals Unearthed,” are among a collection of 46 million scientific specimens of all kinds that the academy’s scientists have gathered from around the world and are mostly available to scientists from other research institutions.
