NYFF 2016: Preview of the 54th New York Film Festival

Founded in 1963, the New York Film Festival predated both he Sundance and Toronto festivals, which eventually loomed much larger in erms of size, media attention and industry influence (both serve as sales markets). New York’s main claim to fame was as a tastemaker and gatekeeper: it very selectively imported the most acclaimed films from abroad as well as introducing important new voices in American filmmaking.
