Rosetta probe set to collide with comet 67P as 12-year mission comes to an end

Spacecraft’s final descent to the surface of the duck-shaped comet marks the end of an extraordinary journey – and will give ESA scientists ‘emotional closure’ “Comets, importing change of times and states, brandish your crystal tresses in the sky,” Shakespeare wrote in Henry VI, Part 1, in a nod to the age-old belief in the divine influence of the small, icy bodies. When the Rosetta spacecraft touches down on the surface of its chosen chunk of dust, ice and rock on Friday, it will mark the end of the mission that has dispelled the cloud of mystery and superstition that has surrounded comets for millennia.
