Beautiful, Stirring, and Overcrowded

This weekend, in the top-floor galleries of the newly opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, my daughter and I made the kind of intellectual and emotional connection that great museums offer their visitors. We stood together in front of a small display devoted to the power of gesture. Light reflected off the exhibit from the 360-degree video screens encircling the room, which aired a looped supercut of black culture’s greatest hits.
