Solange Knowles’s Album of Black Life in America

Music has a tendency to varnish or exaggerate, to soften or obscure, to put language into code. But on her new album, “A Seat at the Table,” Solange Knowles favors direct communication, as if she has discovered the power of speaking plainly. Her subject is blackness in America, and the tangle of experience and emotion that accompanies it. When she is angry, she says so—“I got a lot to be mad about”—even as she acknowledges that, as a black woman, “I’m not really allowed to be mad.
