Flying jewels spell death for tarantulas: Study of a North American spider fly genus

(Pensoft Publishers) North American jeweled spider flies are a genus of metallic green, purple, or blue insects that are widely known as important pollinators of flowers. Their dark side is their specialized larval life history, as their maggots live as internal parasites of tarantulas, ultimately consuming the spider from the inside out. A revision of the genus, published in the open access journal ZooKeys, recognizes six species and presents a phylogenetic tree of relationships among them.
