Scientists speed up muscle repair -- could fight dystrophy

(Carnegie Institution for Science) When skeletal muscles are injured, muscle stem cells wake up from dormancy and repair the damage. When muscles age stem cell number and function declines. Using genetically modified mice, Carnegie's Christoph Lepper and team found that while a muscle's size remained unchanged, it supported a much greater number of stem cells than previously thought.
