Race for East Bay state Senate District 9 gets tense in debate

Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond — grew tense during a recent League of Women Voters debate at Berkeley City College. The contenders, Nancy Skinner and Sandré Swanson, argued Saturday over the region’s housing crisis, the statewide drought, California’s chronically underfunded public schools, and what they both called a broken criminal justice system. Swanson, who lives in Alameda, now runs an Oakland foundation that funds job training and scholarships for black and Latino youths.
