Melvin Grumbach, influential SF pediatrician, dies

Dr. Melvin Grumbach, a San Francisco pediatrician and internationally famed expert on the often controversial issues of hormone development in children, died Tuesday after a heart attack. A longtime professor of pediatric endocrinology at UCSF, Dr. Grumbach pioneered research in the development of sexual differentiation in children before birth, in the gender identity of children born with ambiguous genitalia, and in the varied hormones active in puberty.
