Gerard Pique Stirs Controversy With Shirt Sleeves Gesture, Announces Spain Retirement

Gerard Pique has had his troubles with Spain’s supporters, but perhaps never quite as openly as on Sunday when the Barcelona defender announced his impending retirement from international football. The controversy came from a seemingly innocuous act. Against Albania in a FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifier, Pique chose to cut the sleeves off a long-sleeved Spain shirt, rather than wear the short-sleeved version replete with the colors of the Spain flag.
