Barcelona is banning cars from massive new 'superblocks'

Many cars are no longer welcome in Barcelona. In September, the city began implementing a plan to create a set of new "superblocks," car-free areas that are designed to maximize public space. Each superblock combines 12 city blocks together into a pedestrian-friendly mini grid, with drivers forced to go around the outside. The only cars allowed to enter are those belonging to local residents (who are required to drive at slow speeds).
