Natural gas hydrate in the foraminifera

(Science China Press) Highly saturated natural gas hydrates have been discovered in the fine-grained sediments of Shenhu area, South China Sea. Foraminifer is considered of the key factor that provides ideal places for hydrate growth and accumulation. In this paper, micro-focus X-ray computed tomography was used to observe the hydrate distribution inside and outside the foraminifer shells.

Gas hydrate dissociation prolongs acidification of the Anthropocene oceans

Biology / Marine Biology : Ocean Acidification

Anthropogenic warming of the oceans can release methane (CH4) currently stored in sediments as gas hydrates. This CH4 will be oxidized to CO2, thus increasing the acidification of the oceans. We employ a biogeochemical model of the ...

Are gas hydrates a source of environmentally friendly energy?

Academics / General Science : ScienceDaily: Science Society

Gas hydrate is also known as the ice that burns. And all that burns releases energy. And a lot of energy is stored in hydrates and there are gigatons of it stored in the sediments of the oceans.

New source of methane for gas hydrates in Arctic discovered

Academics / General Science : ScienceDaily: Science Society

Researchers have identified a new source of methane for gas hydrates -- ice-like substances found in sediment that trap methane within the crystal structure of frozen water -- in the Arctic Ocean. The findings, point to a previously...

Rising Arctic Ocean temperatures cause gas hydrate destabilization and ocean acidification

Biology / Marine Biology : Ocean Acidification

Vast amounts of methane hydrates are potentially stored in sediments along the continental margins, owing their stability to low temperature – high pressure conditions. Global warming could destabilize these hydrates and cause a rel...

Natural gas hydrate in the foraminifera

Issues & Causes / Environmentalism : Physorg: Earth

Natural gas hydrates are clathrate hydrates that consist of water molecules and natural gas molecules (major constituent: methane). They are mainly distributed along continental slopes of the oceans or permafrost regions on land. Hi...
