Ground down by savagery – the agony of Aleppo

Since the Guardian’s Middle East correspondent first visited east Aleppo in 2012, the Syrian war has exacted a brutal toll. Assad’s forces, ruthless jihadists and Russian bombs have killed or displaced most of its population and reduced its sweeping boulevards to rubble. Now, after 3,000 years of history, the city is on its knees In the distance, Aleppo briefly emerged from the smoke and dust of war, a low grey skyline on a brown summer plain.
