Fighting pain through knowledge about sensory organs in the fingertips

(University of Alabama at Birmingham) Jianguo Gu has unraveled how sensory information that is processed in the Merkel discs in fingertips is conveyed to the ending of a sensory nerve, the start of its journey to the brain. Such molecular understanding may lay the foundation to treat the intense pain from a gentle touch that is felt by some patients with inflamed skin, a pain called tactile allodynia.
