Sector Tailwinds Likely To Persist For REITs

Over the past year, much hype has been generated around the creation of a new Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) sector for Real Estate, which finally arrived on August 31st, 2016. The creation of a new Real Estate GICS sector is a recognition of the size and prominence that REITs have obtained over decades of growth. However, the creation of the sector is unlikely to have an direct and meaningful impact on near term expected returns or risk characteristics of the underlying securities.
