A new ruling could be a game-changer for Uber drivers across the U.S.

NEW YORK — A recent ruling from the New York State Department of Labor that makes two Uber drivers eligible for jobless payments has sent Uber scurrying for an appeal. The on-demand car service has until now enjoyed skipping out on many of the costs that most other companies can't avoid, such as minimum wage and workers’ compensation insurance. That's because Uber's drivers are considered independent contractors.
