An Art of Loopholes

The first time I met the French artist Philippe Parreno, one afternoon last April, I found him hunched over a laptop in his Paris studio, spying on a beaker full of yeast he was breeding in the Gladstone Gallery’s uptown New York townhouse. Housed in a bioreactor, the micro-bacteria were visible to him only as a series of live data charts tracking various biological rhythms, from oxygen consumption to alcohol production, and although the gallery was not yet open—it was 8 A.
