It didn't matter that walls were crumbling, and fire swept a blackened swath through the city. There was no stopping labor. Reports from the ensuing days suggest there were hundreds of them. In addition to the 1906 event, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake is forever etched in our minds. Monday is the 27th anniversary of the magnitude-6.9 Loma Prieta quake.
