S.F. fire battalion chief died Sunday while on duty

A San Francisco fire battalion chief with 26 years of experience with the department died Sunday morning after responding to a fire call. Terry Smerdel collapsed shortly after he returned to his office. He was found on the ground and unresponsive by his colleagues, and was later pronounced dead at the scene. Smerdel joined the San Francisco Fire Department in 1991. “Terry was a valued member of our department and loved by all,” said Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White in a statement.
