What about Self-Determination?

I was reading about the declaration from France that they would refuse to recognize an independent Catalonia. And of course, France doesn’t want to hear about an independent Basque region, either. Likewise Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria are deeply opposed to an independent Kurdistan, since they all have large numbers of resident Kurds. It’s helpful to remember that the Resolution 1514 of the UN Charter states  All peoples have the right to self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.
