When it comes to rats, even scientists can get caught up in the blame game. For you see, in the case of the most common, the brown rat, its species name (Rattus norvegicus) is really a misnomer. No one knows why this became the accepted nomenclature, though perhaps, English naturalists first wanted to pin it on the Norwegians---even though there was no evidence they ever came from Norway.
