The Patriots actually play in Foxborough, Mass. Here’s why they’re called ‘New England’

They’re named for a region, not a city or state. The New England Patriots play their home games in Foxborough, Mass. Their home field is Gillette Stadium, about a 45-minute drive from the center of Boston. When it was founded in 1960, the team was called the Boston Patriots. It kept the “Boston” label through its first decade of play. The American Football League merged with the National Football League in 1970, and the franchise changed its name to the “New England Patriots” a year later to position itself as the representative of an entire region.
