Borders crossed: Growing up in Texas heat didn't stop this trio from reaching the Winter Games

Sam McGuffie never entertained the prospect of lugging a 505-pound bobsled when he was hurdling Texas high school football defenders in 2007. McGuffie had dabbled in gymnastics, karate, BMX and more. His 83 rushing touchdowns and another 44 receiving attracted the likes of Pete Carroll and Bob Stoops on the recruiting trail. But bobsledding, in Texas? "You can go throw a football," said McGuffie, 28, who starred for Houston-area Cy-Fair High.
